Come Visist 2021 Kristallnacht Art Contest Winners

BY NANCY PETTUS, DIRECTOR OF HOLOCAUST EDUCATION

(Originally published in the November 2021 Jewish Review.)

Comments such as “I think every project should win first prize.” and “They all broke my heart.” could be heard among our 2021 Kristallnacht Art Contest judges as they struggled to choose the three prize winners in the High School and Middle School divisions and then select 10 Honorable Mention projects at each level from our group of 45 entries. Taking their task very seriously, Zarrow Pointe residents Arlene Chemers, Marilyn Kulick, and Isrella Taxon read each artist’s statement and earnestly pondered the merit of each artistic creation. The criteria used to evaluate the pieces were: historical accuracy; originality; attention to detail; and work/ time investment. A HUGE thank you, judges, for your time and expertise. I know it was not an easy task.

For the past 3 years our Kristallnacht Art Contest has offered Fall semester students an opportunity to showcase art from area schools that reflects the artist’s(s’) response(s) to their study of Kristallnacht. As a secondary goal, our hope is to generate an interest in the study of the Holocaust among the teachers and students we encounter. I would like to recognize and thank the five participating schools and their teachers: Jenks HS, teacher Christina Henson; Skiatook HS, teacher Katrina Morrison; Broken Arrow Centennial MS, teacher Courtney Cunningham; and All Saints Catholic MS, teacher Holly Proctor. Prize money in each division is: 1st Prize: $250; 2nd Prize: $150 and 3rd Prize: $50. Congratulations to the winners, honorable mention, teachers, and all who participated.

Student art will be on display in the Sharna Newman Frank Education Gallery at the Jewish Federation of Tulsa for the next month. We welcome you to visit and enjoy Kristallnacht’s artistic and insightful interpretation, as reflected in these students’ creations.
